Ainulindale by Ominously Ainulindale by Ominously
Sauron taking part in the Great Music.

"Then the voices of the Ainur, like unto harps and lutes, and pipes and trumpets, and viols and organs, and like unto countless choirs singing with words, began to fashion the theme of Ilúvatar to a great music; and a sound arose of endless interchanging melodies woven in harmony that passed beyond hearing into the depths and into the heights, and the places of the dwelling of Ilúvatar were filled to overflowing, and the music and the echo of the music went out into the Void, and it was not void."
Silmarillion

your so right. its funny, normally you see sauron depicted in his later form as a tyrant and dark lord. hard to believe he once had "angelic" qualities.

Maiar were also Ainur. They were all ainur in the beginning, but the ones who chose to move to earth were called Valar and Maiar.

I like how he seems to be half matter and half energy, as if his shape hasn't fully formed yet.

Sauron was a Maiar, but his master Melkor was one of the Ainur.
